Early this year I bought one of the earliest Diana 50s: early 1950's. Just picked up the last Model made, 50 T01 in a pretty rare parkerized variant. Came today and it's about like new. The sight in the middle is the "Diopter 60." This was OEM for the models 60, 65, and 66 barrel-cocking recoilless match rifles from about 1963 to 1978. The unit on the left is the "Diopter 75," introduced for the model 75 sidelever match rifle in 1977. Either will fit most model 50's perfectly. The two share some internal parts and are similar.

The test. I shot indoors from 25 yards off a sandbag rest. I used the artillery hold with the rifle rested on my off hand, about 8-9 inches forward of the triggerguard. The Diana 50 is an underlever, and that steel cocking mechanism makes it heavy up front, so this is the most comfortable way to stabilize it.

6,590. That's an M&G Diana Original model 50E. The E either stands for export, or England. As I understand it, the E was a no-frills model (also sold to the British colonies branded as a Gecado) made expressly for the U.K. market from around 1952-60something.

There is also a forward ramp on the spring tube for the sporter sight, so there is enough distance for the eye to pick up the rear notch. The Diana 50 has two ramps for the rear sight. The one on the rear is for the target peep and the one in the front is for when the sight is converted into a sporting sight. The tops of each ramp are serrated.

You may recall that 9 went into .549-inches at 10 meters, and the other one opened the group to 1.064-inches. That was both the best and worst group of that test. This time the greater distance sorted things out. At 25 yards, 10 Superpoints made a 1.959-inch group.

In my experience, any Diana rifle made in the post-war years had an exceptionally good level of metal polish and blueing, and the springs and seals are also excellent and long-lived. The rear match sight is the Diana Diopter.

According to the Blue Book of Airguns, Diana's model 50 was produced from 1952 until 1965, when the T01 variant took over. That one lasted until 1987, so in all the rifle had nearly a 4-decade run.
